The sea lion colony that lives in los Islotes has been familiarizing with humans thru decades what gives us a chance to swim with them. The bird colonies that live in the island are stunning.

The Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve interpretive hike is in one of Baja California Sur's most beautiful but least explored areas. Part of an island off the coast of Baja 10 million years ago, the Reserve is home to an incredible diversity of plant and animal life. On this 'Reach for the Sky' hike, you'll hike as high up the mountain as you can and still get home before dark! This tour is recommended for experienced hikers only.

You'll depart from Todos Santos at 9am and drive for approximately an hour from the ocean, through the desert, to the mountain trail head where the hike starts.

The walk begins in the selva Baja caducifolia (desert scrub) and continues through lush reserves of oak forest and pine. Your guide is a professional naturalist guide and a gifted story-teller, as well as a certified Wilderness First Responder. Hence, you will get a lot of great information about local flora, fauna and history.

The Biosphere Reserve (where you'll be hiking) was part an island off the coast of Baja some 10 million years ago, and the incredible diversity of plant and animal life of the reserve still reflects the island isolation the area once enjoyed. Over 23% of plants and 10% of animals found in the reserve are endemic to the area.

Chef Iker Algorri will pack the picnic lunches that you take on the trail and this includes delicious sandwiches and fruit. You will hike as high up as you can and still get home before dark. The return to Todos Santos is around 5pm.

We start off from Todos Santos at 7:00 AM, and drive the 90 minutes across the peninsula to La Paz, where we gather up our snorkeling gear. We start off from Todos Santos at 7:00 AM, and drive the 90 minutes across the peninsula to La Paz, where we gather up our snorkeling gear. It's then off to visit the whale sharks – so named because at up to 59 feet and 15 tons they are definitely a whale of a shark – in the shallows of the Bay of La Paz. And while your mother probably told you to stay away from sharks, these gentle giants are only interested in plankton – all human flesh is safe! After the thrill of swimming next to these gentle giants, it’s off to the unbelievable joy of swimming and playing with the sea lion puppies at the permanent sea lion colony of Los Islotes. These fun-loving marine mammals love playing and interacting with humans, and are always disappointed that we can never keep up a game of tag as long as they can. Getting to the sea lion colony is half the fun of the day, as we regularly see dolphins, whales, mantas, sea turtles, coastal birds and more on the way there and back.

We cap off this wonderful day with a delicious picnic lunch at one of the gorgeous beaches on the incomparable Isla Espiritu Santo. It’s an absolutely fabulous day! We return to Todos Santos in the 5-6 PM timeframe.

Camp Cecil de la Sierra is a luxury tent camp in a mango and grapefruit grove in the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve of Baja California Sur, about 90 minutes from Todos Santos. It is the sister property to our award-winning Camp Cecil on Isla Espiritu Santo in the Sea of Cortez, which means that you can now enjoy luxury tent camping in both the Seas and Sierras of Baja Sur. Camp Cecil de la Sierra is on the property of a local ranching family that we have worked with for over a decade, and the camp highlights both the cultural and natural heritage of the Sierras. The family is an integral part of the experience, providing all the meat, cheese and tortillas for the camp, teaching guests how to make tortillas and cheese in the traditional manner, and acting as guides in the reserve. Great hiking, birding and star-gazing are the main activities, with terrific, home-cooked meals and daily happy hour rounding out the experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Zorro's Camp in the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve

Stop At: Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, Mexico
The Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve is one of Baja´s most beautiful but least explored areas. Part of an island off the coast of Baja 10 million years ago, the Reserve is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. Reflecting it's long history of island isolation, almost 25% of plants and 10% of animals found in the Reserve are endemic to the area, i.e, they are not found anywhere else on the planet. In a recent study in the Reserve, scientists documented entirely new species of plants and insects that had never been seen before, and they believe there are many more yet to be discovered. In addition to wildlife such as mountain lions, mule deer, gophers and badgers, a wonderful array of birdlife inhabits the reserve, including the endemic cape pygmy owl, Xantus's hummingbird and Belding´s yellowthroat.
