Take in the beauty of the mountain landscapes around Palenque on a day trip to Cascadas de Agua Azul and Misol-Ha. You'll descend on foot to the stunning waterfalls, with time for swimming in deep pool at the base of jungle-covered cliffs (weather permitting). Travel by air-conditioned vehicle round-trip or opt for drop-off or bus service to San Cristobal. You can include a traditional lunch in your 5-hour itinerary, or upgrade for a full-day tour that includes the archaeological ruins of Palenque.

You will be picked up at your hotel in Palenque in the morning or afternoon and be transferred by minivan to Cascadas de Agua Azul, which consists of multiple cascades following one after another. Admire the indigo blue water and lush vegetation, and listen to the inexhaustible sound of water flowing into the Agua Azul River.

Here, descending limestone steps form a series of stunning waterfalls that create natural pools, with the larger cataracts reaching as high as 20 feet (6 meters). Intrepid travelers can reach them via the staircase with the help of a guide.

Then, be amazed at the 115-foot-high (35-meter) Cascadas de Misol-Ha, which empties into a large, tranquil pool under a river cliff of calcareous rocks. If weather permits, there will be free time for swimming at the falls with caution. Soak in the refreshing falls amid scenery that typifies the rainforest of the Chiapas highlands.

If you opted for lunch, you're served a traditional meal like fried fish with rice in a rustic hut. Your 5-hour tour ends with hotel drop-off in Palenque, or with bus service to or hotel drop-off in San Cristobal de las Casas, depending on option selected. Alternatively, upgrade to add a guided visit to the archaeological site of Palenque to complete a 9-hour tour.

Visit the archaeological site of Palenque, inscribed on the World Heritage list by UNESCO. Your full-day tour includes guided visits to the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Temple of the Foliated Cross, and the palace belonging to Maya royalty. Round-trip hotel transport and admission fees are included.

After pickup from your hotel in Palenque city, you will travel to the archaeological site of Palenque. Located in the middle of lush vegetation, the UNESCO World Heritage site served as one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Maya culture during the Classic period. Almost 200 years before the pre-Columbian ruins were discovered in the 18th century, the nearby city was named by the Spanish — a literal translation of the Ch’ol word otulún, which means fenced or fortified place.

On arrival, follow your guide and listen to informative commentary. You'll visit the Temple of the Inscriptions, the site's largest pyramid where the tomb of the great Maya ruler Pakal was found. See the royal palace and the Temple of the Foliated Cross. If there is enough time, you'll also explore cultural exhibits at the museum.

Visit Bonampak with its fascinating murals and high quality ancient Mayan frescoes as the main attractions. The pyramids are surrounded by the colors and sounds of the Jungle of Chiapas called also the Lacandon Forest. Yaxchilán is an splendid setting of an evergreen forest blanketing a magnificent archaeological site famous for its statuary art, stelae and lintels. The Maya took to building the terrain of a peninsula surrounded by a meandering river. This is a shared service.

You will be picked up from your Palenque hotel in the early morning and travel to the archaeological eating breakfast along the way to the site of Yaxchilán. Absorbed and hidden in the Lacandon Forest, this site has a terrific setting above a horseshoe loop in the Río Usumacinta. The control this location gave it over river commerce, and a series of successful alliances and conquests, made Yaxchilán one of the most important classic Mayan cities in the Usumacinta region. Archaeologically, Yaxchilán is famed for its ornamented facades and roof combs, and its impressive stone lintels carved with conquest and ceremonial scenes. A flashlight is helpful for exploring some parts of the site. After the exploration is done, you will break for lunch (included).

Next, you will see Bonampak, which gives you a striking view of the social organization and daily lives of the Mayan people. Embedded in the Lacandon Jungle, the ruins lay with their painted walls in the Mayan language. They stand out from surrounding temple complexes because of the famous Temple of Murals. The murals lining the walls of this temple depict with astonishing realism and vivid colors of the actions of a battle. These murals are considered some of the most impressive of pre-Hispanic Mexico's many treasures. Spanning over four thousand hectares, to date, this ancient city has only been explored in two buildings: the Great Plaza and the Acropolis, which together make up a rectangular space of 110m (360ft) in length and 87m (285ft) in width. When you are done exploring, you will return to Palenque, and end the tour with a drop-off to your hotel.
